[RxPG] New Delhi, March 15 - Shivan Bhatia of the National Institute of Fashion Technology - here Thursday claimed the coveted student's slot at next week's Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week -.

Bhatia, from among 11 finalists, emerged the winner in the final round of 'The Debut' contest launched this year by fashion brand Wills Lifestyle to enable upcoming talent to showcase their work along with the best of the country's designer fraternity at the biannual fashion fiesta.

'It's unbelievable. I can't imagine my luck. Obviously, the judges have liked my work. It's a great boost for me to launch in this manner,' a beaming Bhatia, who will graduate from NIFT later this year, said moments after being selected.

It's not just WIFW that he will get a chance to participate in, as he will also be sponsored to visit the international fashion fair 'Pret-a-Porter' in Paris.

'The Debut reflects our commitment towards wider engagement with the fashion fraternity through recognising and promoting new talent. We are encouraged by the very enthusiastic response that the first edition of this annual initiative has received,' said Chitaranjan Dar, the CEO of ITC Lifestyle Retailing.

'The Debut adds a new dimension to our engagement with various constituents of the fashion fraternity, including designers, students of fashion and models,' added Atul Chand, vice president - of ITC Lifestyle Retailing.

This year, the contest was open to students of seven NIFT branches across the country - New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Gandhinagar - and covered various disciplines of design like fashion, leather, textile, knitwear and accessories.

The contest underwent a rigorous three-round process to evaluate the collections on the basis of design, as also technical and commercial competencies.

The first round comprised an evaluation of an illustration-based design portfolio submitted by 200 hopefuls. Forty short-listed entrants then showcased garments converted from the entry illustrations at three regional rounds.

The 12 finalists showcased their collections here before eminent designers, Rohit Gandhi and the Shantanu-Nikhil duo, as also representatives of NIFT and WILW organiser Fashion Design Council of India -.

'Their talent is amazing. Some of them are quite close - of our leading designers,' Gandhi said of what was on offer.

As an added boost for the finalists, leading models like Indrani Dasgupta, Amanpreet Wahi, Laxmi Rana and Sapna Kumar showcased their collections.

'You will notice that the selection process was very exacting and was designed to ensue that only the very best came into the final round,' Chand said.

In the coming years, the scope of the contest would be expanded to include many more fashion design institutes, he added.
