Kerala seeks expatriates' help for its hospitals

[RxPG] Thiruvananthapuram, March 17 - Kerala Saturday urged expatriates from the state to donate hospital equipment for its poorly maintained primary health centres.
'We require a lot of hospital equipment and look forward to help from the large number of Keralites settled abroad towards donating equipment for government hospitals, especially those at the village and block level,' Health Minister P.K. Sreemathi told reporters here.
Government medical colleges and district hospitals in Kerala often witness big crowds because of lack of equipment at primary and community health centres.
'A few years back some hospital equipment was gifted from the US but it could not be cleared for various reasons. We request the large number of non-resident Keralites settled abroad to provide us with new hospital equipment.
'We will clear it and it will be given to the hospitals they choose,' said the minister.
'I myself very recently opened a Rs.5 million electronic library at the Alappuzha Medical College, which was donated by the alumni there. We really look forward to help from all quarters to improve the public healthcare system here,' said the minister.
