[RxPG] Hamburg, May 16 - Andy Murray was left fearing for his place in Wimbledon after injuring the right wrist on his 20th birthday during a first-round match at the Hamburg Masters.

Murray, ranked 10th in the world, led Italian Filippo Volandri 5-1 when he sustained the injury during a groundstroke Tuesday.

The Scot had the wrist taped, resumed play for two more rallies before ending the match screaming in pain. He was swiftly taken to hospital for an MRI scan, but results were not available immediately.

'I have damaged the tendon, I am not sure yet how bad,' Murray said later. 'I hit a forehand and as soon as I hit I knew something wasn't right. Something moved inside the wrist and I was in a lot of pain.'

Murray said he would talk to doctors in Hamburg Wednesday and seek further opinions back home for the best way to treat the injury. He said he will likely have to wear a cast for a few days and has been told to rest the wrist.

Murray said that 'being realistic it is not looking great' that he will play at the French Open starting in less than two weeks. But he did not want to make predictions for Wimbledon in late June.

It was the latest setback for Murray, who has been plagued by injuries to his groin, hip and back in recent weeks.

There was also agony, in a different way, for Spain's Tommy Robredo.

The sixth seed became the first defending champion since compatriot Albert Portas in 2002 to crash out in his first match, 6-7 -, 6-2, 6-4 against qualifier and countryman Nicolas Almagro in the second round, after a first-round bye.

A quartet of Germans also lost, with only former Wimbledon quarter-finalist Florian Mayer keeping the German flag flying.
