[RxPG] Berlin, May 18 - When buying a vacuum cleaner, consumers should not be led astray by high wattage.
The amount of electricity used has little to do with performance, according to a recent test of 17 vacuum cleaners by Stiftung Warentest, the Berlin-based independent German consumer-protection group reported in its April issue.
Suction power depended on the appropriate interplay of the basic device, nozzle construction, suction pipes and airflow, the group added.
People who were allergic to dust should buy a vacuum cleaner with 'very good' dust retention capacity such as a model with high-efficiency particulate air - filter, the group advised. Such filters can often be retrofitted, they said.

Five of the 17 models tested were rated 'good', 10 'satisfactory', one 'adequate' and one 'inadequate'. The group said the test had also found the more expensive models tended to perform well especially in terms of durability and suction power.
