[RxPG] On Board Air India One, April 24 - President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Tuesday said that Indian scientists had 'excelled' in their latest achievement by successfully launching a commercial satellite into orbit and said: 'We are one of the space powers.'
Speaking to journalists on board his special aircraft while travelling to Strasbourg, the seat of the European Parliament, Kalam held the launch of the Italian satellite AGILE by India's launch vehicle PSLV-C8 as a 'major breakthrough', saying it heralded India's entry into the commercial market in space.
The president said that there were three important milestones in India's space research programme - one, the launch of Agni-III, nuclear-capable ballistic missile, which he called a 'very important milestone'; the second was the testing of the Indo-Russian nuclear-capable supersonic cruise missile BrahMos; and the third was Monday's launch of the Italian satellite by the Indian Space Research Organisation -.
Kalam, himself an internationally renowned aero scientist, is addressing the International Space University - in Strasbourg later Tuesday.
The ISU has over 2,500 alumni from 93 countries working in government and commercial space activities.
