[RxPG] Jerusalem, April 20 - Professor Liviu Librescu, an Israeli citizen shot dead while trying to protect students in a classroom in this week's Virginia Tech shooting in the United States, was buried Friday morning at a cemetery in the Israeli city of Ra'anana.
Librescu, 76, an internationally respected aeronautics engineer and lecturer at Virginia Tech, was shot to death in the deadliest shooting rampage in US history Monday, which claimed 33 lives including the gunman.
Witnesses said Librescu, who survived the Holocaust, blocked the door to his classroom with his body so students could escape the assailant by jumping out of windows.
Hundreds of mourners accompanied Librescu to his final resting place.
According to Israeli daily Jerusalem Post, the professor's son Joe Librescu mourned for his father at the funeral saying, 'I'm proud of you. I walk today with my head held high.'
Librescu's wife, Marlena Librescu, mourned the loss of 'not just a husband, but my best friend.'
'I was blessed to be with him each day for 42 years - to learn from his wisdom, to receive his advice - and I thank you for giving me our two children, I'm now blessed to be with them,' Marlena was quoted as saying.
The Romanian-born professor migrated to Israel in 1978, then left Israel for the United States in 1985. He had taught at Virginia Tech for 20 years.
