[RxPG] New Delhi, May 15 - The government has allowed 222 private satellite TV channels to uplink from India as on April 30 while six channels uplinked from abroad have also been permitted to downlink in India, the Lok Sabha was informed Tuesday.
In a written reply, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said that in addition to this, 54 foreign TV channels have been provisionally permitted to downlink in India.
The proposals of 71 private satellite TV channels for permission to uplink from India are at various stages of scrutiny in accordance with the existing guidelines.

The channels are required to keep a record of programmes downlinked for a period of 90 days and to produce the same before any government agency as and when required, as prescribed under the downlinking guidelines, the minister said.
The government has also sanctioned setting up of an Electronic Media Monitoring Centre to monitor contents of satellite TV channels.
