[RxPG] New Delhi, March 22 - The quintessential yet contemporary Indian woman, with a six-yard sari, bangles and hair embellishments, made a grand appearance in designer duo Ashima-Leena's show at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week - in the capital Thursday.
A refreshing break from the western and the European look that has been showcased by other designers in the WIFW until now, Ashima-Leena's collection with the typical Indian look splurged on designs of old motifs of India.
'We knew that we couldn't replicate the antique embroidery and the brilliant designs of the old motifs of India. So we used digital printing to replicate those embroideries on the fabric,' Leena told IANS.
Using different fabrics like georgette, lycra and silk, the collection constituted saris with deep cut blouses, churidars with off-shoulder kurtis, asymmetrical kurtas with harem pants and golden belts and kaftans.
The collection can be divided into two distinct groups.
The first line showcased free flowing kaftans, loosely fitted kurtas with puffed sleeves and saris in mono colour with a simple gold border. The second had garments with more of gold and blue gem embellishments giving the collection a gorgeous and a royal look.
With shades of pink, orange, red and sea green dominating, the collection was very feminine.
Rich accessories also formed a major part of the collection. Bangles, hair bands and lots of jewellery complemented the collection's typical Indian look.
'I really liked the collection. The resurgence of the old motifs and other such designs especially on the saris signifies going back to the roots. It's a good break from the typically western collections that we have been seeing till now,' designer Ritu Kumar told IANS.
'We are targeting the Gulf market hence the large number of kaftans and kurtas. At the end we must remember that the whole idea here is to do business,' Ashima said.
The duo put together the collection in less than a month. The garments are priced Rs.9,000 onwards.
