[RxPG] New Delhi, Dec 7 - The cabinet Thursday approved the signing of a memorandum of understanding - between India and the US for developing an aviation cooperation programme -.

'It would be a specific co-operation programme in the civil aviation regime for seeking assistance under the umbrella of co-operation framework agreement signed between the Department of Economic Affairs - and United States Trade and Development Agency - on Nov 9, 2005,' said an official statement issued after a cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The specific objectives of ACP are:

To promote increased safety, operational efficiency and system capacity in the Indian aviation sector;

To facilitate and coordinate aviation industry training and technical ties between the US and India; and

To strengthen US-India aviation cooperation.

The cabinet also approved amendments in the Scheduled Tribes And Other Traditional Forest Dwellers - Bill, 2006.

'The enactment of the bill with amendments would undo the historical injustice by recognizing and vesting the forest rights in the forest dwelling scheduled tribes who have been residing there for generations and who are integral to the very survival and sustainability of the forest eco-systems, but whose rights could not be recorded,' the statement said.

'This would also strengthen the conservation regime by recognizing the permanent stake of the forest dwelling scheduled tribes,' it added.
