[RxPG] New Delhi, Nov 23 (IANS) Traders in the capital Thursday expressed cautious optimism over the Supreme Court ruling granting temporary reprieve from sealing to over 18,000 businesses operating illegally in residential areas.
'After the court verdict, there is a sense of satisfaction among those traders who had filed their petition before the court-appointed monitoring committee. We urge the government to work towards giving a similar reprieve to all traders,' said Praveen Khandelwal, secretary general of the Confederation of the All India Traders (CAIT).
'There are still 550,000 traders who are facing the heat of sealing in Delhi. We request the government to bring in the new Master Plan for Delhi before Jan 31 next year. The court verdict has given us hope and the government must act fast,' Khandelwal told IANS.
The Supreme Court Thursday gave relief till Jan 31 to over 18,000 traders in the capital and allowed 1,700 schools operating from residential areas to continue till May next year.
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Y.K. Sabharwal ruled that traders who had given undertakings to the court-appointed monitoring committee that they would stop commercial activity in residential areas could continue on giving a fresh affidavit by Jan 31, 2007.
Since Nov 15, 18,305 traders had submitted undertakings before the monitoring committee, of which 34 were found to have violated their own undertaking. These 34 businesses will face sealing, the court ruled Thursday.
Officials of CAIT, the trade body spearheading the traders' agitation, will now meet Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy and other political leaders seeking a complete amnesty.
'We will meet Reddy and other political leaders in the coming days to deliberate on the issue. We also want to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and represent our view for his consideration,' said S. Mani, chairman of CAIT.
Mani said, as per the court directive, all traders who had filed undertakings between Nov 15 and 19 will again file affidavits before the monitoring committee to continue their business till Jan 31 next year.
Traders, whose shops were sealed in the last two weeks, also expressed their satisfaction over the development.
'I have not received any information about the development but if the court is granting a reprieve, there cannot be any better news than this,' said Sushil Bagga, a trader in East of Kailash.
