[RxPG] Mumbai, Nov 20 (IANS) Five pavement dwellers here were seriously injured when a speeding Santro ran over them Sunday night, barely a week after seven people were crushed to death in a similar incident.

The car rammed into makeshift huts in Mazgaon area while the dwellers were sleeping inside, said police.

According to eyewitnesses, three people were in the Santro when the incident took place.

'The driver, who appeared to be drunk, first rammed into a motorcycle parked on the kerb before climbing on to the pavement and ploughing into the roadside shanties, running over the people sleeping inside,' an eyewitness was quoted as saying.

The injured have been admitted to J.J. Hospital and two are said to be critical.

Police have registered a case of rash driving at the Byculla police station and the driver has been arrested.

In a separate incident, a 17-year-old was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle and hit a concrete wall in suburban Bandra.

Police claim that several youths were speeding on the wide Bandra reclamation road Sunday night but panicked and fled after seeing a police patrol. In the process, one of them lost control and drove into the concrete wall.

Eyewitnesses, however, have a different story to tell.

Said Jaswinder Singh, an eyewitness: 'As the youths tried to flee, a police constable hit the biker with a baton due to which he lost control and rammed into the wall and died.'

The victim has been identified as Mohin Khan, a resident of Khar in northwest Mumbai.

Several people took to the streets to protest the police action resulting in a scuffle. Police had to resort to baton-charge to disperse the angry crowd.

On Nov 12, seven pavement dwellers were killed and 15 injured when they were run over by a Toyota car driven by teenagers in upmarket Carter Road in suburban Bandra.
