[RxPG] New Delhi, Nov 23 - The martyrdom day of Guru Teg Bahadur, to be observed Friday, is an occasion to remember the greatness of the sacrifice of the Sikh guru, said President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Thursday.
In a message on the eve of the martyrdom day, Kalam said: 'The life, teachings and martyrdom of Guru Teg Bahadur form a message of ever-lasting significance of oneness of all humankind, service and secularism. Guru Teg Bahadur sacrificed his entire life for the welfare of the deprived and the needy.'
Kalam said the day would also be an occasion for everyone to remember the greatness of the guru's sacrifice.
Teg Bahadur, the ninth guru of the Sikh religion, sacrificed his life defending his faith against the Mughal rulers.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that this solemn occasion reminds all Indians of the guru's great teachings and supreme sacrifice. In a message, he said, 'Let us take a pledge to work relentlessly to root out any divisive tendencies in our society and nation'.
