[RxPG] London, Nov 24 - An Indian asylum seeker in Britain was handed out a prison term of three-and-a-half years in a double stabbing incident last year.

Amarjit Singh Ghara of King Street, Southall, in west London stabbed his Indian roommate Rakesh Kumar after a row over a broken kitchen cupboard.

Later, Ghara stabbed 15-year-old Sunny Uppal when he came to the rescue of Kumar.

Ghara, 44, was staying illegally in Britain at the time of the incident after the authorities rejected his asylum application, according to Ealing Times newspaper.

James Scobie, who defended Ghara in the court, was able to convince the judge that his client was an epileptic and had run out of medication on the morning of the attack and in the opinion of one doctor was 'in the early stages of an episode'.

Judge Moss, while handing over the jail term to Ghara Thursday, described the attack as 'an uncharacteristic loss of temper influenced, as I find to be likely, by the early stages of an epileptic episode and arising out of a minor domestic incident'.

The judge said he would be recommending Ghara for deportation at the end of the sentence.

'He wants to go home but no one has contacted him at all,' Scobie said. 'The irony is we would be hoping that some steps would be taken to speed it along.

'He appears to be looking forward to going home to rejoin his family in the Punjab after serving his sentence,' he said.

Ghara pleaded guilty to two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
