[RxPG] Ranchi, Nov 23 - Aiming to give a boost to the state economy, the Jharkhand government is planning to patent the variety of organic silk available here.
The Sericulture and Handicraft Department has approached the Central Silk Board - to work towards getting the organic silk patented.
The state government believes that patenting of the organic silk will give a fillip to the state's economy.
'If the organic silk is patented then the state will emerge as a big exporter,' Dhirendra Kumar, special secretary of the Sericulture and Handicraft Department, said Thursday.
'We have also approached international agencies for help in patenting the organic silk,' he said.
'We will export around Rs.60 billion of silk per annum from. This will also engage around 120,000 farmers of the state,' said another official of the department.
Jharkhand aims to produce 1,100 tonnes of silk in the next five years, up from 100 tonnes produced currently. During the period, the CSB will extend financial support of more than Rs.3 billion to the state to promote silk production.
