[RxPG] Guwahati, Nov 24 - A massive security blanket was thrown around this Assam capital Friday, a day after a powerful explosion at the main railway station killed three people and wounded 10 others.
'Police and paramilitary troopers were deployed in strength with roadblocks set up in various entry and exit points to the city, besides conducting a combing operation in some select areas based on intelligence inputs,' a senior police official said.
Security has been intensified at the railway station with armed guards frisking people with metal detectors as well as manually checking bags. 'There are reports about the ULFA and other jihadi elements trying to attack vital installations,' an intelligence official said.
Condemning the blast, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told IANS: 'This is nothing but an act of desperation and cowardice. Innocent civilians are being killed in such attacks.'
The explosion at the railway station Thursday night killed three of a family, including a child, with police suspecting the use of RDX.
'It appears RDX was used although forensic experts would confirm the presence of such substance,' city police spokesperson Rajen Singh said.
Earlier this month, there were two explosions in the heart of Guwahati killing 16 people and wounding 60. The ULFA is accused of a wave of bombings in the past two months in which 20 people have been killed and 106 injured.
The recurring blasts have triggered panic in the state.
'Why is the ULFA targeting innocent civilians? Such random bombings do create panic and we are scared no doubt,' Ramani Das, a textile merchant in Guwahati, said.
The ULFA stepped up attacks after New Delhi Sep 24 called off a six-week ceasefire and resumed military operations after the rebels killed a tea planter and carried out extortions.
