[RxPG] Jaipur, May 16 - Mayawati may have become the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, but it has put a smile on the faces of sculptors here. For, they are quite sure of bagging huge orders for idols of Dalit icon B.R. Ambedkar soon.
In her previous tenures, the Bahujan Samaj Party - chief had placed orders here for Ambedkar statues. And this time, the sculptors have lost no time. They have already busied themselves in carving marble stones.
'We are hopeful of bagging orders from Uttar Pradesh,' P.N. Sharma, an idol maker, told IANS.
Jaipur, especially the walled city area, is a big centre for sculptures. Some are cleaning up the Ambedkar statues lying in their storehouses.
'Five years back, sculptures of Ambedkar and elephants were high in demand. But this time we also expect orders for statues of late BSP leader Kanshi Ram,' said R.S. Joshi, a sculptor.
Full size Ambedkar idols made of black stone, depicting him with a raised forefinger and a book in the other hand, remain high in demand.
In Mayawati's last tenure as chief minister, these statues from Jaipur were placed at various crossings and public parks in Uttar Pradesh, Sharma said.
Another artisan said about 50 idol makers in all received orders last time. These artists sent as many as 500-600 idols of various political leaders to Uttar Pradesh in which the maximum were of Ambedkar.
Most statues are 2 feet to 9 feet high and cost between Rs.10,000 and Rs.105,000.
