[RxPG] Agartala, April 10 - India has partially lifted restrictions to extend mobile telephone connectivity along its 4,095 km border with Bangladesh, officials here said Tuesday.
'The union home ministry has partially withdrawn its restrictions to extend mobile network and signal along Bangladesh and asked the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited - to provide connectivity to people living along the border,' A.K. Gupta, chief general manager of BSNL's northeast circle, said.
The home ministry had earlier barred mobile telephone facilities within 10 km of the border.
'Now the revised order bars mobile connectivity within 500 metres of the border instead of the 10 km restrictions that was there earlier,' Gupta told journalists here.
Mobile network along India's border with China, however, continues to be restricted.
'From Wednesday, we would start providing mobile services to the people of north Tripura district headquarters Kailashahar, which is just along the international border with Bangladesh,' the official said.
BSNL would also soon launch the cost-effective 'triple-play' broadband services in northeast soon - a facility where people can view at least 100 TV channels using high speed internet, video-on-demand, besides normal telephone.
'The BSNL would observe 2007 as the 'Year of North East' to increase the region's overall tele-density and to improve the telecommunication network,' the official said.
'A special economic bonanza is expected to be announced by the union government during the year for the over development of the telecommunication of the land-locked region.'
