[RxPG] Balasore -, April 24 - A court in Orissa's Balasore district Tuesday sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for sacrificing her eight-year-old son to appease a deity three years ago.
Bidyutlata Swain, 43, a resident of Jarakapada slum on the outskirts of Balasore town, had sacrificed her son to Hindu goddess Kali for wealth, Additional Public Prosecutor Bailochan Das told IANS.
Bidyutlata's husband, Gandharba Swain, owned an aluminium-casting workshop that had been shut down due to losses. The family lived in a shack inside the workshop.
'Bidyutlata felt that her husband's fortunes would recover if she sacrifices her son at the altar of the goddess. She had also met some godmen,' Das said.
On June 8, 2004, she sent her husband and eldest son, Bhimsen, to their native place in Puri. She then took her younger son, Satyanarayan, inside the workshop and stabbed him with a trident. She collected the blood and poured it over the image of the goddess.
Satyanarayan died in the local hospital. Police seized the trident and arrested Bidyutlata.
The Additional District Sessions judge Pitambar Das at Balasore, some 250 km from Bhubaneswar, declared her guilty and pronounced the sentence in a crowded court.
