[RxPG] Islamabad, Nov 30 - Islamists protesting a law passed this month by Pakistan's parliament to protect women against violence clashed with police Thursday in Lahore and Gujranwala, reports said.

Several leaders of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal - Islamist political alliance, which calls the legislation contrary to Islamic sharia law, were arrested in Lahore as they tried to organise a demonstration in the city centre after police laid siege to a complex where alliance members had assembled for the rally.

Qazi Hussain Ahmed, MMA chief, succeeded in leaving the city at the head of a caravan of protestors heading to hold a public meeting there.

President Pervez Musharraf, who had pushed parliament to pass the bill, was expected to sign it into law Monday.

The bill amends provisions in criminal laws considered to discriminate against women victims of rape and other sex crimes.

MMA, which rules two western province bordering Afghanistan, is hesitating on carrying out its threat to resign from parliament if the legislation is enforced.
