[RxPG] New Delhi, Nov 21 (IANS) Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Pappu Yadav has threatened to commit suicide over the alleged mental torture meted out to him at the Tihar Central Jail where he is lodged and by the police when he is taken to hospital for medical treatment.

In a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Law Minister H.R. Bhardwaj, Yadav has accused the Tihar authorities of misbehaviour and misconduct and of monitoring his activities. Yadav wrote the letter in September.

Expressing his helplessness in continuing to bear with the 'mental torture', the Madhepura MP has said that he had no other option but to commit suicide along with his wife Ranjita Ranjan, a Lok Sabha MP of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), and their two children.

Yadav is in the Tihar jail for his alleged involvement in the murder of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Ajit Sarkar. He was transferred to Tihar in February 2005 following a Supreme Court order to take him out of Beur Jail in Patna.

Sarkar, a legislator from Purnea, was shot dead by men allegedly acting on Pappu Yadav's order on June 14, 1998.

Yadav has alleged that Tihar officials carried out special 'raids' in his cell in his absence and especially when he was out of his cell to have food.

In the letter, Yadav said that the raids were carried out at the behest of Bihar police officials who were in regular contact with the Tihar authorities through video conferencing.

The four-time MP also alleged that Tihar officials were not providing adequate medical attention to him and he was often denied doctors and medical attendants at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where he is taken for his respiratory and lung problems.

He says that the police monitor all his activities while he is in AIIMS and his movements are video recorded.

In the two-page letter, Yadav alleged that during his stay in the hospital, senior officials would not allow his family members and other visitors to meet him.

Tihar officials admitted that a raid was conducted in Yadav's cell six months ago but maintained that there was nothing special about it. 'It was a routine check and such checks are carried out in all the cells,' said one official.

Denying the allegations by Yadav, the official said they were providing appropriate medical attention to him and diets prescribed by doctors.

Last week, the Supreme Court rejected Yadav's bail petition. The court said that no more bail petitions would be entertained from him and that he had to remain in jail till the trial was completed.
