[RxPG] New Delhi, Nov 24 - In a bid to motivate cricketers to perform consistently, the Indian board is 'serious' thinking of introducing performance-based payment, but a decision is far, far away, according to a top official.

Ratnakar Shetty, chief administrative officer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India -, said that the players have been sounded out on the move and a meeting with them would not be before the team's tour to South Africa ends in January.

'There is a serious thinking about payment based on performance,' Shetty told IANS.

'The players have also been sounded out on this. But this has not been done after India's defeat to South Africa in the second one-day international in Durban Wednesday,' he emphasised.

A furore has been raised after India were shot out for 91 to lose by 157 runs on a Kingsmead Stadium pitch that assisted pace bowlers. Three more matches are to be played, besides the three Tests that follow them.

The current payment structure for Indian players is two-fold: annual contract for which they get a lump sum, and the match fee.

The annual contract is divided into three grades. Grade A, the top of the heap, offers Rs. 5 million, Grade B players receive Rs. 3.5 million and Grade C players are entitled to Rs. 2 million.

For each Test match played at home, a player receives Rs 200,000 and Rs 160,000 for an ODI. For foreign tours, they are paid a lump sum.

Shetty said that once the players would return home from South Africa in January the issue would be taken up with them. No time frame has been fixed to implement this, provided players accept the new salary structure.

'No modalities have been discussed so far,' he averred.
