[RxPG] New Delhi, March 22 - Social activist Medha Patkar was arrested along with 62 other protestors Thursday after they were tried to enter the office of the Planning Commission forcibly, demanding an end to the long-standing issue of privatisation of water on the eve of World Water Day, police said.
Patkar, who led scores of protestors, mostly women from different states, held demonstration regarding water-related issues, outside the Yojna Bhavan that houses the Planning Commission. Some 32 women and 30 male were arrested.
The protestors were demanding restoration of water supply in taps in public places across the country, to cancel the interlinking of rivers project and to declare a moratorium on big dams.
'The arrested people would soon be produced before the magistrate,' a senior official said.
Patkar has been spearheading Narmada Bachao Andolan -, a non-governmental organisation that mobilises tribal people, farmers, environmentalists and human rights activists against the Sardar Sarovar Dam being built across the Narmada river in Gujarat.
