[RxPG] New Delhi, March 30 - The Delhi High Court Friday ordered an embarrassed city police to meet the cost of a duplicate passport of George Mailhot, socialite Bina Ramani's Canadian husband, bitten into pieces by rats in a police station.

Scoffing at the police over their callousness after the incident of the rats destroying Mailhot's passport, Justice B.D. Ahmed said the police must bear the cost of issuance of a duplicate passport.

Justice Ahmed also asked them to get Mailhot's visa permission extended by the government till a duplicate passport is issued by the Canadian embassy.

The judge issued the directions for release of surety bond worth Rs 500,000, which was pledged to the court by Mailhot as security for the release of the passport of Malani Ramani, the daughter the socialite couple.

The passports of Mailhot and Bina Ramani were deposited with the Special Investigation Team - of the police in the first week of February 2007, as sureties for the release of Malani's passport.

Mailhot, Bina and Malani were crucial witnesses in the murder case of ramp model Jessica Lall that helped prosecution secure the conviction of Manu Sharma, son of former Haryana minister Vinod Sharma, Vikas Yadav and Amarjit Singh Gill.

The bizarre incident of rats destroying Mailhot's passport in their custody was disclosed by the police after the couple had moved court for the release of their passports.
