[RxPG] Chandigarh, May 3 - A woman official in the Chandigarh police has tendered her resignation after a male colleague, whom she had accused of molesting and threatening her, was given a plum posting.

Sub-inspector Paramjit Kaur Sekhon submitted her resignation to Inspector General of Police S.K. Jain late Wednesday following a reshuffle of middle-level police officials in the city that saw her senior colleague, Inspector Jagir Singh, get a better appointment than his last.

With his appointment as station house officer of the Industrial Area police station Tuesday, Sekhon put in her papers Wednesday, saying she could no longer be part of a force that rewarded guilty officers.

The police top brass is yet to take any decision on accepting her resignation. Senior police officers were embarrassed by the latest development as Sekhon is on firm ground for any legal recourse she takes later.

'I have submitted my resignation to senior officials. I have nothing to say beyond this. I cannot speak now as I am still part of the force and till my resignation is accepted,' she told reporters.

In February this year, Sekhon accused Singh, then SHO of Sector 34 police station - considered one of the most important police postings in this city - of trying to molest her and, later, of threatening her.

The incident, she alleged, had taken place inside the Sector 17 police station in the room of another SHO. Several police officers, including women, and personnel were present in the police station complex at that time, she claimed.

Singh was arrested after Sekhon lodged a complaint against him and was subsequently suspended. He spent a few days in the Burail prison here.

Singh had claimed his innocence over the incident, saying that the woman cop had misunderstood him as he tried to reason with her on some past issue. He did not, however, deny physical contact with her, saying that he had pulled her plait.

Senior officials intervened after the incident left the Chandigarh police in an embarrassing situation.

Singh then admitted his guilt in court and sought an apology. The case was treated as withdrawn after police officials said that a compromise had been reached between him and Sekhon over the 'misunderstanding'.
