South Africa probes report of swimmer's murder in Pakistan

Pakistani police had said Monday the man, whose body was found in a sack in the Baboo Garhi area 15 km from the city, might have been poisoned, but that the results of chemical tests from the post-mortem examination were awaited.

[RxPG] Islamabad/Johannesburg, April 10 - South Africa said Monday it was trying to confirm whether the body of a man found Sunday outside the Pakistani city of Peshawar was that of South African swimmer Kenneth Smith.
A foreign affairs spokeswoman told South African public radio that South African mission in Pakistan was still trying to ascertain the identity of the man, whom police in Peshawar have named as Kenneth Scott Andrew Smith.
An official in the Peshawar police department confirmed the name of the deceased Tuesday but said they did not know whether he was the South African 10-km open-water swimming champion.
South Africa's Beeld newspaper reported Monday that the body was that of 26-year-old swimming champion Kenneth Smith.
Pakistani police had initially given his name as Kenneth Scott Andrew.
Until they were contacted about his death, Smith's family were not even aware that he was in Pakistan, Beeld reported. He had apparently said he was going to Dubai to look for a job.
