Intel unveils energy-efficient quad-core processors

The two low-voltage processors - operate at 1.86GHz and 1.60GHz, feature a unique eight megabytes - of on die cache for faster memory data communication and run on dedicated 1,066MHz front side buses.

[RxPG] Bangalore, March 20 - Intel Corporation, the world's largest chip-maker, has unveiled two quad-core server processors that consume 35-60 percent less power compared to the existing servers.

As part of its expanding family line-up, Intel has introduced 11 server, workstation and desktop PC quad-core Xeon processors with 50watts since November 2006 as against the 80watt and 120watt products.

Servers based on the new processors are designed for dense Internet data centres, blade servers and industry verticals such as financial services where scale and density of servers are sensitive to power and cooling costs.

'As firms focus on reducing electricity bills and cooling costs associated with computing needs, these new processors, requiring 12.5watts for each of the four cores or processing engines, deliver similar performance and set a new standard in energy efficiency,' a company statement said here Tuesday.

'We have responded to the industry's call to deliver breakthroughs for data centre energy efficiency. IT managers can get quad-core Xeon servers at the price of dual-core products,' said Intel's digital enterprise group vice-president Kirk Skaugen.

Servers based on the new processors will be available worldwide over the next few months from Acer, Dell, Digital Henge, Fujitsu Siemens, HP, HCL, IBM, Lenovo, Rackable Systems, Samsung, Verari, Wipro and others.
