Indian team for Azlan Shah hockey named, Tirkey captain

[RxPG] Chennai, April 21 - Midfielder Prabodh Tirkey will lead the country in the 16th Azlan Shah hockey tournament in Malaysia next month, the Indian Hockey Federation - announced here Saturday.

The 18-member team will be playing under a new coach, Joaquim Carvalho, in Ipoh from May 5-15. India won the bronze last year.

There is an injury concern with midfielder Ignace Tirkey. And if he fails to regain full fitness, Vikram Kamath will be his substitute, the IHF said in a statement.

IHF secretary K. Jothikumaran said that former captain and defender Dilip Tirkey and forward Gagan Ajit Singh failed to join the Bangalore preparatory camp as they are playing professionally in the Netherlands.

Jothikumaran said that they would be considered for selection in future.

The selectors named four standbys. They are: goal-keeper Sreejesh, defender Sunil Yadav and forwards Somanna and Bruno Logun.

The selection panel that picked the team were Gurbax Singh and Harmik Singh, Ajitpal Singh -, M.M. Sommaya - Carvalho, coaches M. Ramesh Parameswaran and M.P. Singh and camp coordinator R.K. Shetty, who is also the team manager.

The Netherlands won the title last year while Australia finished second.

THE SQUAD:

Goalkeepers: Bharath Chetri and Baljit Singh

Defenders: William Xalco, Raghunath V.R. and Harpal Singh

Midfielders: Ignace Tirkey -, Gurbaz Singh, Bimal Lakra, Prabodh Tirkey -, Sardara Singh and Didar Singh

Forwards: Sarwanjit Singh, Shivender Singh, Prabhjot Singh, Rajpal Singh, Bharath Chikkara, Roshan Minz and Tushar Khandekar

Standbys: Sreejesh -, Sunil Yadav -, Somanna and Bruno Logun -
