[RxPG] Wellington,April 28 - The Monarchist League of New Zealand said Saturday that Prince Harry should not be allowed by Tony Blair's government to become a target in Iraq.

Queen Elizabeth II is titular head of state for New Zealand as well as Britain and Harry is therefore also third in line for that position in New Zealand.

Robert Mann, acting chairman of the Monarchist League, acknowledged: 'No doubt the prince wants to go, with his mates.'

But he pointed out that then-Prince of Wales, who later became Edward VIII, wanted to go into combat during World War I, but was debarred from front-line service by the secretary for war Field Marshal Lord Kitchener because special assassination or kidnapping squads could target the prince.

'Prince Harry is a few more heartbeats away from our throne, but he should be protected on the same principle,' Mann said. 'Royal family members of this rank are not just any ordinary democratic citizen.

'Weapons systems are emerging unpredictably in the present Bush/Blair Iraq war which can kill or maim military personnel in what had been thought safe zones. To expose the prince to this type of danger, especially in an unpopular and futile war, would be wrong.'
