[RxPG] Sydney, May 9 - An Indian origin family therapist has been awarded the Victoria Police Multicultural Partnership Award.

Muktesh Chibber was recognised for her outstanding contributions to the advancement of police and multicultural community relations. She received the award last week.

The award was instituted to recognise local ethnic community members who have contributed positively to the advancement of police multicultural relations in Victoria.

Born in Beirut, Chibber received her education in India, England, Poland, New Zealand and Australia. Prior to migrating to Australia in 1991, Muktesh was at Delhi's Loreto Convent and Carmel Convent, ethnic newspaper IndoLink reported.

Chibber has worked in child protection with Victoria's department of human services and has extensive experience both in the educational and welfare sector.

'It was my dream to set up a service to help migrant families coming to Australia,' said Chibber.

'Migrant families from Asia, Iraq, India, Pakistan etc tend to have a slightly different approach to family relations as opposed to the mainstream community. The challenges they face are unique to their situation and it is important to offer them a culturally sensitive family relationship service,' she said.

'Our programme operates at three levels viz early intervention -, preventive - and post separation -. My role is to have an input into the policy that is funded by the federal government by educating the police, advocacy and policy research at a senior level.'
