[RxPG] Dhaka, April 5 - The chief election commissioner in Bangladesh, A.T.M. Shamsul Huda, said Thursday that it would take about 18 months to prepare the country for a credible general election.

Addressing a press briefing, Huda said that from the existing workload on the commission it was clear that the parliamentary polls would have to be put off for a longer period than originally thought.

Huda disclosed that it would take no less than a year to give every eligible voter a foolproof voter identification card to check gross irregularities during polling.

Another six months would be needed to stop the holders of black money from infiltrating the country's electoral process.

The general election held in January was stalled midway because of an impasse between the Awami League and its rival Bangladesh Nationalist Party sparking political unrest.

President Iajuddin Ahmed who appointed a caretaker interim government to steer the country back to the democratic process by holding a transparent national election declared a state of emergency.
