[RxPG] Chittagong, May 18 - India's Dinesh Karthik rued playing a wrong shot that led to his fall after scoring a half century on the opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh here Friday.

'I had put some runs on the board -, but I could have been there a little longer,' Kathik told reporters after India scored 295 for three wickets on the truncated day.

'I just thought that the shot will come off. Perhaps, not the best shot to be played at that moment,' he said after his knock at the Bir Shrestha Shahid Ruhul Amin Stadium.

Karthik and captain Rahul Dravid - were involved in a 124-run second wicket partnership that put India back on track after Wasim Jaffer was out on the very first ball of the match, castled by pacer Mashrafe Mortaza.

Karthik, primarily a wicket-keeper but playing as a specialist batsman here, also admitted to being nervous initially.

'It was a challenging effort as I was a bit nervous in the beginning. As the innings progressed I settled down,' said the Tamil Nadu player.

It was only the second time Karthik had opened in a Test match. The previous occasion was on the tour of South Africa last year.

'The team management had shown a lot of faith in me. I have confidence in my ability,' he said.

'Generally I spoke to senior members in the team and other senior cricketers about what is going on,' he said about his latest role in the team.

Karthik said that there was no juice in the pitch.

'There is not much in the wicket ... flat one ... only that an odd ball kept low,' he said.

'When we bowl we will have to bend the back and put the ball in the right areas. If we do that I am sure we can restrict Bangladesh and do well in the first match.'
