[RxPG] New Delhi, April 19 - The directors of the six Indian Institutes of Management - are meeting Friday to decide whether they should put up the first admission list April 21 as decided earlier or await a Supreme Court hearing on quotas for backward class students on Monday.

'We are meeting Friday to discuss whether we should wait till Monday before putting out the first admissions list scheduled for April 21,' said one of the directors requesting not to name him.

The apex court is to hear Monday a government application seeking to vacate a stay on 27 percent quotas for other backward classes in elite educational institutions.

'At least two top officials of the human resource development ministry will also participate in the IIMs meeting,' he said without giving details about where they are meeting.

Sources said Delhi was the first choice as a venue for the meeting but it was ruled out, as it would attract too much media attention. 'Ahmedabad or Kolkata could be the venue,' the source added.

On March 29, the apex court had stayed the 27 percent quota for other backward classes in higher educational institutes.

Though the human resource development ministry had issued a circular April 5 asking the IIMs to put admissions on hold till further orders, the IIMs unanimously decided on April 12 that they couldn't wait beyond April 21.

IM-Ahemedabad director Bakul Dholakia had said, 'The list that will be released would be according to the capacity of last year. The additional seats, which we were planning to add, would be on hold. After an internal discussion, all the six IIMs have unanimously arrived at this decision. We should protect the interests of the student community.'

It was not clear then whether the court would hear the case before August. After the HRD ministry moved an application to vacate the stay on quotas, the apex court has listed it for hearing on April 23.

The IIMs had earlier decided to implement the 27 percent quota decision over a period of three years.
