[RxPG] Lucknow, May 15 - Owning moral responsibility for the poor performance of his party in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party - vice president Kalyan Singh Tuesday resigned as the party's state in-charge.

In a letter to BJP president Rajnath Singh, the former chief minister said he owned moral responsibility for the party's defeat, since he had been entrusted with the task of leading the election campaign.

Kalyan Singh was also projected by the party as its chief ministerial candidate.

BJP's tally plummeted from 88 in 2002 to a dismal 49 in the elections concluded last week. Its allies won two seats.

Kalyan Singh urged Rajnath Singh to revamp various party units and to build the entire cadre afresh.

He hoped Rajnath Singh would infuse new life into the party and would gear it up for the 2009 parliamentary elections.

He called upon the party workers not to lose heart and push themselves towards rebuilding the party 'to meet the challenges that lay ahead'.
