[RxPG] Madurai, May 15 - The Tamil Nadu police Tuesday took into custody a strongman of the M.K. Azhagiri camp, known as Attack Pandi, the main accused in the attack on the office of the Dinakaran newspaper in Madurai in which three people were killed.

Attack Pandi is the main accused named in the police complaint. He had surrendered before the Madurai rural police Tuesday and was produced before a judicial magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.

Several dozen people close to Azhagiri, the elder son of DMK patriarch and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, have been arrested this week for the violence southern districts saw on Wednesday. The violence was sparked off when the paper published a survey that said people preferred the chief minister's younger son M.K. Stalin over Azhagiri as political heir of Karunanidhi.

Director General of Police D. Mukherjee admitted: 'There has been dereliction of duty and I have ordered an inquiry by a senior police officer. With a 45-strong force deployed, how could this have happened. They should have prevented it -.'

Union Telecommunications and IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran, whose brother Kalanidhi Maran owns Dinakaran, lost his job Sunday.

Among those arrested for the attack are the Mayor of Madurai and her husband.
