[RxPG] Hyderabad, April 5 - The row over the Andhra Pradesh government's decision to allot land to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's son for his cement firm took a new turn Thursday with the Telugu Desam Party - demanding that the governor order a probe.
Alleging that the chief minister was misusing his powers to favour his son Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy and other family members, a delegation of TDP leaders called on Governor Rameshwar Thakur and submitted a memorandum.
They alleged that a major chunk of 487 acres of land allotted to the firm at Thipalur and Nallingapalli in Kadpa district was originally allotted for poor and weaker sections of the society. The chief minister also gave another 2,000 acres to the same company for mining, the opposition party stated.
TDP leaders said Rajasekhara Reddy, popularly known as YSR, allotted the land in violation of all relevant laws and despite the fact that a case relating to the land was pending in a court.
C. Ramchandraiah, who led the delegation, said they urged the governor to exercise his powers to cancel the related government order and were assured that he would look into the demand.
The state cabinet on March 29 had decided to allot the land to Raghuram cement company, of which Jaganmohan Reddy is the director, for a cement factory.
However, following criticism by the TDP, Jaganmohan Reddy declined to take the land.
This is the latest in a series of land controversies involving the chief minister. In December, he had surrendered about 1,000 acres of surplus land owned by him and family members in his native Kadpa district. The opposition had demanded his resignation for holding on to the land for decades in violation of various legislations.
