Indian Government will ensure availability of Essential Drugs at Reasonable Prices

Mar 29, 2005 - 12:22:00 AM

Prices of non-scheduled formulations are fixed by the manufacturers themselves. However, The Government takes corrective measures where the public interest is found to be adversely affected.

[RxPG] The Government will ensure availability of essential drugs including those for cancer and AIDs at reasonable prices. Announcing this at a Press conference here today, Minister of Chemicals & Fertilizers and Steel , Shri Ram Vilas Paswan said that a Task Force constituted by the Government was examining the various aspects concerning drug prices.

He said that 74 bulk drugs specified in the first schedule of drugs (Prices Control) Order, 1995 and the formulations based thereon are under price control.

Prices of non-scheduled formulations are fixed by the manufacturers themselves. However, The Government takes corrective measures where the public interest is found to be adversely affected.

Earlier, a Committee under the Chairmanship of Joint Secretary, (PI) was constituted to examine the span of price control (including trade margin) and to suggest measures for fulfilling the objective of National Common Minimum Programme to ensure the availability of life saving drugs at reasonable prices.
