Ramadoss to issue show cause notice to AIIMS faculty

May 7, 2007 - 9:06:41 PM
The association questioned the impartiality of the committee, saying it consisted of 'known associates of Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, whose sole purpose seems to assail the AIIMS and its faculty'.

[RxPG] New Delhi, April 7 - Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss will issue a show cause notice to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences - faculty association for censuring the report prepared by University Grants Commission chief S K. Thorat on caste-based discrimination at the country's premier referral hospital.

After the governing body meeting Monday evening, health secretary Naresh Dayal told reporters that Ramadoss, who is also the president of the institute, will issue a notice to the faculty.

As soon as the decision was announced, members of the faculty waiting outside the meeting hall shouted slogans against Ramadoss. They also took institute director P. Venugopal away from the press briefing area. Venugopal was also supposed to address reporters.

On Sunday, the AIIMS Faculty Association had said that the three-member Thorat Committee, constituted by the Centre last year to look into allegations of caste-based discrimination at the premier hospital, was 'an ad hoc kitchen garden committee' of the health minister.

They had said: 'We decry these attempts to tarnish our image. We have a track record of performance and we do not practice any discrimination on the basis of caste or creed.'

The association questioned the impartiality of the committee, saying it consisted of 'known associates of Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, whose sole purpose seems to assail the AIIMS and its faculty'.

The Thorat committee had submitted its report to the minister Saturday.
