New Royal College Recommendations for Treatment in Dementia

The Royal College of Psychiatrists is pleased to bring to professionals and other interested parties our guidance on good practice. We hope that this report will help to raise standards for specialists and primary care, together with everyone involved in working with people with dementia.
By The Royal College of Psychiatrists, [RxPG] Forgetful but not forgotten: assessment and aspects of treatment of people with dementia by a specialist old age psychiatry service is the title of a new report from the Council of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
The report represents a consensus statement from an Expert Working Group of the Faculty of the Psychiatry of Old Age, and has been produced in collaboration with the Alzheimers Society and with representation from primary care.
It describes good practice, with particular attention focused on working with primary care and with carers. In preparing the report, the Working Group has used systematic summaries of published evidence.
The reports Executive Summary lists recommendations under a number of headings.
· Diagnostic assessment and investigation
· Principles of treatment of people with dementia
· Working with people with dementia in primary care
· Working with people with dementia and their carers
· Capacity, legal, financial and risk issues in dementia
· Treatment of cognitive symptoms in people with dementia
· Treatment of non-cognitive symptoms in people with dementia
· Non-pharmacological approaches in people with dementia
Dr. Robert Jones, a consultant in Old Age Psychiatry who chaired the Working Group that prepared the report, commented, Dementia is a devastating problem for so many older people and their carers.
