Moradabad -, Feb 3 - Amit Kumar alias Santosh Rameshwar Raut, the absconding kingpin of the kidney transplant racket, may have undergone a plastic surgery in Nepal, the police said Sunday.
'We suspect that Amit has undergone a plastic surgery in Nepal to evade his arrest but we have some possible links about his whereabouts, which are being verified,' a senior police official said.
The clandestine transplants, which served international clients from Britain, the US, Greece, Lebanon, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Dubai, was busted by the police forces of Delhi and Haryana Jan 24 in Gurgaon, an emerging IT hub on the outskirts of the Indian capital.
The Uttar Pradesh and Haryana police have continued searches at possible hideouts of Amit and other accused in the kidney racket in Delhi, Gurgaon, Jaipur and Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the police, Amit and other quacks in his group had performed at least 600 illicit kidney transplants over the past decade for profits running into billions of rupees.
On Saturday, the police revealed Amit had connections with underworld figures as well as some politicians. They said mobster Chhota Shakil had once threatened him, demanding extortion money, and he had links with a Haryana MP.
Dubbed as 'Doctor Horror', Amit had also acted in at least three B-grade movies and had financed several such films. The police said he had invested a large amount in several hospitals in Nepal and the Middle East.
Amit is suspected to have escaped to Canada through Nepal. His family has been living in Canada.
Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation was all set to take over the probe.
A CBI official said the agency was likely to begin its investigation from Monday. 'We expect that all required formalities would be finished by Monday. We would immediately begin the probe,' the official said.
