Over 300 Maharashtra medicos served termination notices

Mumbai, April 18 - The Maharashtra government Friday hit back at the striking medicos in the state by serving termination notices to 311 of the about 3,500 agitating resident doctors of government-run hospitals.
Confirming the development, state coordinator of the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors - Ravikant Singh told IANS that the 'termination notices' ordering resident doctors to report back to duty within 24 hours were served Friday afternoon on 92 medicos in Nagpur and 219 others in Aurangabad.
'So far, we have not received any notices in Mumbai and are awaiting reports from other colleges in the state,' said Singh.
On Thursday, MARD joined the four-day old agitation of 2,000 medical interns across 13 government-run medical colleges in the state in support of their demands.
The interns' demands include restoring the number of post-graduate seats from 411 to the original number of 653, filling up several teaching faculty vacancies and giving them due promotions, he said.
Over 12,000 medical students from across the state have been supporting the strike of medical interns.

MARD called general body meetings in all its 13 constituent colleges around the state late Friday evening to take a final decision on the termination notices and the future course of the agitation.
